Rural Issues

Jo Chytka, Director of Advising and Career Services
University of Wyoming

I remember driving through the countryside thinking how serene the sight was, never realizing the scope and complexity of issues beneath the quiet beauty

The word "rural" probably conjures up some picture in your mind depending on your life experiences to date. The New Webster Dictionary offers a very generic definition "of or characteristic of the country (as distinguished from cities or towns), country life, or country people, rustic: as opposed to urban." While rural America does encompass small cities and towns, the distinguishing characteristic is the vast geographic area covered.

Did you know? Rural America covers 83% of the nation's land. That is over four-fifth's of the country! Sixty-five million people live in rural America.
