Some rules for using this service

For consultants and vendors listed in this directory
  1. When listing your services and your expertise, please describe them as accurately and as honestly as possible, and be ready to provide references and samples of your work to any organization that is interested in working with you.
  2. Please do not send unsolicited emails or make unsolicited calls to any organization listed in the Idealist nonprofit directory. Organizations looking for the services you provide will search the site and contact you directly, or they will post projects which you can find here.
  3. When responding to a project posted by an organization, please do not telephone or email the organization more than twice. If you still have not heard from the organization after your second inquiry, please assume that the organization is not interested in your services.
  4. Please respond only to those projects that you are qualified to fulfill, and only those that you would accept if offered the project, given your time constraints and the compensation and project description the organization has indicated.

For organizations using this directory
  1. Please contact a consultant or post a project on Idealist only if you are financially prepared to follow through with the project.
  2. Please take some time before posting your project to determine, as specifically as possible, what you are looking for in a consultant. For help defining your project, please click here. Here are some examples of effective project descriptions, and some that are less so.

Effective project descriptions
  • "We are a small children's art museum with an annual budget of $XXX located in New York City looking for a consultant to help us develop a capital campaign for a new wing. Our estimated budget for this project is $X."
  • "Environmental organization based in San Francisco and working on clean air issues, with an annual budget of $XXX, is looking for help promoting our organization and its work. We're looking for someone with experience in marketing, public relations and/or branding. Our estimated budget for this project is $X."
  • "Our organization promotes awareness of HIV/ health issues in Africa. We have grown rapidly over the past year, from a staff of five to a staff of fifteen, and we'd like a consultant to come in and help us develop HR policies and procedures for our growing team."
  • Less effective descriptions:
    • "We're looking for funding help."
    • "We're an arts organization in Boston, and we need help in a variety of ways."
    • After posting your project, we encourage you to acknowledge all inquiries from any consultants that respond to it. A simple note indicating that you have received their offer and that you will get back to them if you are interested would be great.

If you feel that a consultant listed here is harassing you in any way, please let us know, either by calling 212-843-3973 or sending an email to consultants@idealist.org
